Position Title: Director of Education Ministries
Position Grade: 30 -
Position Overview
Director of Christian Education provides team-based, educational leadership to the children and family ministries to nurture, encourage, and strengthen Christian spiritual development and faith formation in individuals and families consistent with the mission of the congregation.
Essential Functions
- Develop, guide, oversee, and implement education ministries for children and families moving them beyond knowing the faith to living it by working cooperatively with other staff, leadership teams, and organizations within the congregation. Cradle Roll (Birth to 3 years), Confirmation (7th grade to 9th grade), Church School (3 years to 6th grade), Special Events (e.g. Summer, First Communion, etc.)
- Recruit, train, and support the long and short term volunteers to serve as teachers, facilitators, and resource managers in the children’s and confirmation education programs.
- Provide staff leadership presence when Church School, Confirmation and other educational ministries are in session.
- Develop a calendar for all educational activities and coordinate communications with the support staff, including information for worship bulletin, the Messenger, fliers and brochures, etc.
- Maintain records of participants, meetings, policies and planning for children’s and Confirmation educational programs.
- Oversee the Education Finances:
- Develop a yearly Christian Education budget in collaboration with the finance committee and the senior pastor for presentation to the church council.
- Purchase necessary Educational Ministry supplies, curriculum and materials within budgetary constraints.
- Coordinate fund-raiser as appropriate. (e.g. Souper Bowl, Lenten Suppers, Camperships, etc.)
- Supervise Education Ministries staff (e.g. Childcare Coordinator, Christian Education Assistant)
Requirements
- Passion for Jesus Christ and love for youth and their families.
- Ability to communicate the Christian faith and an understanding of Lutheran theology
- Ability to assess and/or write Christian educational curriculum from a Lutheran theological perspective
- B. A. degree or equivalent or higher in Education or a M. A. degree in Christian Education
- Preferred: 5 to 7 years of teaching experience in a public school.
- Strongly preferred: M.A. degree in Christian Education from a Lutheran Seminary.

- Ability to connect on an interpersonal human level with youth and their families.
- Ability to recruit and equip youth and lay leaders and delegate responsibility
- Strong organizational and leadership skills
- Willingness to work flexible hours; (evenings and weekends)
